Most Common Myths about Darkweb

The concept of "Darknet" may very soon become a household word. Following the sentencing of Ross Ulbricht, the creator of Silk Road, and a series of articles claiming that ISIS uses secret websites to plan its attacks, this hidden part of the Internet is being discussed more than ever.

But most of what you heard about Darknet is a myth. In reality the Dark web is different from how it is usually represented – this is not a huge space under our Network, where dishonest individuals sell forbidden goods without any knowledge of the authorities.

Other parts of the web are no less “dark”

After reading any article about Darkweb, it will seem to you that terrible things lie there: stolen data, terrorist sites and child pornography. However, although these things can really be on the Darknet, they can be found very quickly in the "normal" network, and this is quite easy to do without resorting to cunning encryption programs.

Over the years, there have been sites onion where you could immediately find out someone’s social security number, date of birth, full name, address and phone number for about a dollar, and sites that hosted a lot of stolen credit databases, portending a surge in fraudulent spending .

Terrorist sites are also in full view of anyone with access to the Internet. Conventional websites tor allow radical supporters and potential jihadists to communicate with each other and post harsh propaganda videos. The first al-Qaeda site was launched in 2001, and although this site was blocked, other Islamic-radical sites exist on the Web and are still very popular.

Contrary to rumors, there is only indirect evidence that ISIS uses Dark net. The fundraising site discovered by the Washington Post at the time of this writing was collecting exactly zero bitcoins, like another site that I personally discovered. It is worth noting that on both sites it was openly stated that they were transferring money to terrorists, so that it could be fakes. The only website of Islamic radicals on the Dark-net that managed to collect at least something received only $1,200 this year. Although the Islamic State is not mentioned openly on it.

Deepweb is not outside the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies. Although Ross Ulbricht is the most famous Dark Web user to be in jail, he is far from being the only one. According to independent researcher Gvern Branven, since 2011, more than three hundred people related to the Deep web have been arrested. Arms dealers, drug dealers, their buyers, and staff and site administrators were successfully arrested by the police. Nevertheless, Branwen explained that this number should be taken as a minimum, since it includes only the arrests of people whose connection with the Darknet was well known.

What do the numbers tell us a Dark Web?

What we call Dark internet is very small. The World Wide Web consists of more than a billion sites, while a recent analysis found seven to thirty thousand Tor sites hidden in the browser — the exact number depends on the method used. This is 0.03 percent of the web. A tiny fraction of the content that can be found anywhere else. Contrary to what the politicians and the media announce, the full size of the Tor does not exceed the regular Network.
It remains unclear how many people use the Darktor on a regular basis, but the impression is that they are very few. Tor Prolect claims that secret sites occupy only 1.5% of the total traffic, and about two million people use the Tor browser itself. In short, the number of DarkWeb Tor users is just a fraction of dark web Tor users, most of whom just want to secure their online presence.
